Summertime means many things to many people, but I daresay that it means the most to teachers.
I, for one, can’t wait to do may of the things that most of you will be doing — sleeping in just a little later, catching up on leisure reading, getting my house back under control, taking the kids on daytrips to our favorite spots.
However, like so many other die hard ed techies out there, I’ll be splashing around with new Web 2.0 tools and trying out apps that I just never seem to get to during the school year. I stuck my toe in the water with Diigo, but have I really explored all that it can do? I can’t wait to tap into my Twitter network to learn more about this. (I’m sure someone tweeted two weeks ago that they were developing a tutorial!)
But first I have to come clean and say that I haven’t yet explored a couple of the most basic spaces on the web that I should have, by now.
So, in this order, I hereby resolve to immerse myself fully (in the shallow end!) of MySpace, Facebook, and SecondLife. (A audible roar from the DEN STAR educators… I swear I heard it!)
Please put on your lifeguard gear. I fully expect that you’ll be there when I gurgle, “HELP! HElp. hel……”

If you want to meet up in SL let one of the DEN in SL leadership council know and we will help you. Plan on attending one of our Wed Workshops – 5 PM SLT,( 7 PM CDT, 8 PM EST). The June line up is great!!
Great post….summer for teachers is a wonderful time to catch up on all the FUN things (and the not so fun like housework). Come be my friend on Facebook & I’ll challenge you to a game of Scrabulous!
Lori and Karen – See I just KNEW my Tweeple would come through for me! I’ll check into the Wednesday Workshops, and I’m looking forward to Scrabulous. (Looked at it before, just didn’t get it…)
Thanks for commenting!
The trick to exploring the Web 2.0 stuff is not to feel you have to actually use all the tools available. Find those few that work for you and don’t worry about the rest. If they’re that great, or become the new “killer app”, you’ll at least be able to say you knew about it, checked it out, but decided you didn’t really need it.
This is so true, Luke. Funny how tired people have become of tools like TwitWheel and Wordle already, hm? I know I can’t get to all of them, so I wait until the hubbub has subsided, usually. Those that “rise to the top” tend to be worthwhile — but not always.
I know I’m not using Diigo well enough to get the full potential, so I’m going to look into tag bundling as a start. I haven’t gotten much out of Facebook yet except a large group of friends (many of whom I know from Twitter, anyway) and a new addiction to Scrabulous. But the one I probably should really be looking into is MySpace — because my musician son is interested in MySpace Music as a vehicle for promoting his music. (Then again, why not use Facebook for that?) Well, first things first… need to build his website first!
But thanks for the comment. You’re so right.
